Breaking Through Barriers: New Advocacy Resource for Families and Communities

Practical guidance can make advocacy feel less overwhelming, especially when families are navigating education, health and disability systems at the same time.

Breaking Through The Barriers

Advocacy can feel overwhelming, particularly when families are navigating education, health and disability systems at the same time. Clear, practical guidance is essential.

Our colleagues at Parents of Deaf Children (PODC) have released an important advocacy resource designed to support families and communities to better understand their rights and pathways to support.

What the resource is designed to do

The Breaking Through Barriers resource focuses on empowering families with knowledge, language and practical tools to advocate for communication access, inclusive education and appropriate supports across systems.

Resources like this are critical because advocacy is not just about responding to barriers. It is about helping families build confidence to navigate services, ask the right questions, and ensure a child’s needs are understood and respected.

Because advocacy works best when families are supported with clear, accessible information.

At Deafness Forum Australia, we strongly support tools that are based on lived experience and practical application, helping families move from information to action.
